How do you know when to stop a side income idea?
checked 2026-10-09
By Tori, last checked 2026-10-09. Where we could not open a source we say so.
Three numbers to write down first
- Spending limit. The most money you will put in, counted as a total, so it cannot creep up.
- Weeks. How long you will give it. Pick a date on the calendar.
- Result. What would make you keep going, in a number you can read off a page: a sale, a view count, a reply.
Stopping on the date, when the result is not there, is the method. People rarely stop on time without a rule, because every extra week feels like it might be the one.
What to log every week
- Minutes spent
- Money spent
- People reached
- Money earned
- Net so far (earned minus spent)
- One thing you will change next week
Is it the page or the audience?
This is a rule of thumb we use on our own products, not an industry standard. If a product page has had about 150 views and nobody has bought, the page or the offer is the likely problem, so change the wording, the price or the promise. If it has had fewer than 150 views by day 14, too few people have seen it to judge the page, so the work is getting it in front of people. The numbers are a way to decide what to change first, not a forecast.
An example with made-up numbers
Limit USD 30, 8 weeks, result: one sale. After week 4 you have spent USD 12 and 6 hours, and the page has had 40 views. The rule says WARNING: audience, not page. After week 8 the page has had 160 views and no sale: the page needs a change, or you stop. These figures are invented to show the arithmetic. They are not a result anyone got.
Costs to put in the log
Fees are money spent, so count them. From our dated platform sheets:
| Platform | Fees | Read |
|---|---|---|
| Gumroad | Direct sale: 10% + $0.50; Discover marketplace sale: 30% | 2026-10-08 |
| Etsy | Listing: $0.20 per listing, runs 4 months; Sale: 6.5% of price plus shipping; Payment processing (US): about 3% + $0.25 per order (secondary sources); Etsy ads off-site: 12 to 15% of the order when a sale comes through them | 2026-10-08 |
Before you pay anyone for a method, use the check on the free checklist page. The US Federal Trade Commission has alleged false earnings claims in cases that involve AI income products; see the scam check page for the sources.

Questions
How do I know when to quit a side hustle?
Set three limits before you start: money, weeks and a result. When the date comes and the result is not there, stop.
How long should I give a side income idea?
Pick the number of weeks before you start. Each way we rate carries its own stop rule; the right number is the one you write down and keep.
How many views do I need before judging a product page?
As a rule of thumb we use on our own products: about 150. Below that, there is not enough traffic to judge the page.
Does the tracker promise income?
No. It is a spreadsheet that records what you spend and earn. What you earn depends on you, your audience and each platform's rules.
- Weekly log: minutes, money spent, people reached, money earned, one thing to change
- Stop rule with a KEEP GOING, WARNING or STOP box
- Listing test: page problem or audience problem
- Works in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice
