What to charge for a digital product
Compare what you keep on Gumroad, Etsy and Payhip, or find the price that leaves you the amount you want. Fees checked 2026-10-09.
Fees checked 2026-10-09 on the platform’s own pages: Gumroad · Etsy · Etsy processing table · Payhip · Stripe. Platforms change fees, so check the page before you set a price. Taxes, VAT and currency conversion can add cost and are not included unless a box says so.
The Side-Income Tracker is a spreadsheet with a weekly log, a stop rule that prints KEEP GOING, WARNING or STOP, and a listing test that tells you whether the page or the price is the problem.

How to pick a price
- Start from what you keep, not what you charge. Fees take a bigger share of low prices because of fixed per-sale amounts.
- Look at five similar products. See what buyers already pay for something like yours and what those products leave out.
- Keep the price the same every day. Fake countdowns and "only 3 left" hurt trust and break platform rules.
- Test one change at a time. Change the price or the title, never both, and give it 14 days of views before you decide.
The fee is only part of the choice. Gumroad Discover and Etsy can show your product to strangers; your own link only works if you already have people to send there. A cheaper fee on a page nobody visits keeps you nothing.
Questions people ask
What should I charge for a digital product?
There is no single right price. Look at similar products buyers already pay for, work out what you keep after fees, and test one price for two weeks. Start low enough that a stranger can say yes without thinking, and keep it the same every day.
Which platform keeps me the most per sale?
On 2026-10-09, for a USD 9 product with Stripe's standard card rate counted, Payhip's Free plan left more than Etsy or Gumroad Discover, and Gumroad on your own link depends on whether processing is charged on top. Reach matters as much as the fee: a platform that shows your product to buyers can be worth a higher fee.
Why do low-priced products lose so much to fees?
Fixed fees per sale, such as USD 0.50 on Gumroad or USD 0.25 + USD 0.20 on Etsy, do not shrink with the price. On a USD 5 product they alone take 9% to 10%.
Is this calculator saving what I type?
No. It runs in your browser and stores nothing.
