Captions, subtitles and translation: is it worth it? (2026)
Watch, not proven yet checked 2026-10-08
You add accurate captions or subtitles (in any language you can check) to videos for creators and small businesses, with AI producing the first draft and you checking it.
At a glance
| Time each day | 40 minutes a day |
|---|---|
| Set-up, once | about 4 hours |
| Cost to start | USD 0, then about USD 11 a month |
| First dollar, if it works | 4 to 14 weeks |
| Who does the work | About 70% of the work can be done by an AI helper; the rest is you |
| Fits people looking for | extra income on the side, learning a skill that pays, more freedom over time |
| It involves | contacting strangers |
What you are selling
Checked caption and subtitle files, sold per video minute or per video, where the value is a human who reads and corrects the AI draft.
What the evidence says about money
No income distribution for beginners was found. Rev's published per-minute rates are low and its sign-up currently has a waitlist. Studies of freelance platforms show demand for translation and writing fell 19% to 50% after ChatGPT, with novices hit hardest, so this stays on watch: it only makes sense if you speak a language pair clients cannot cover with AI alone, or you check quality for people who need it.
How sure are we: Backed by a secondary source such as press or a review site.
What only you can do, once
- Take a skills test and a sample job for any transcription or subtitle platform you apply to
- Set up PayPal or another payout method
- Decide which language pairs you can honestly check yourself
A first week
| Day | What happens | Who | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | List the languages you can read and write well enough to correct a draft | You | 10 |
| 2 | AI transcribes a 3-minute public-domain video and drafts subtitles in your language | AI helper | 10 |
| 3 | Correct the draft yourself and note how many errors you found | You | 30 |
| 4 | Apply to Rev's freelance list (assessment and sample) | You | 30 |
| 5 | AI drafts a short pitch for local creators who post in two languages | AI helper | 10 |
| 6 | Send 5 messages to creators you already know of | You | 20 |
| 7 | Review: time spent per minute of video and whether it is worth continuing | You | 10 |
The rules where it happens
- Rev (freelance): You do it by hand inside the platform. Published pay per audio/video minute: transcription about $0.40 to $1.10, captions about $0.54 to $1.10, subtitle translation about $1.70 to $4.00+. Weekly PayPal pay. Skills assessment plus sample task required. Rev currently has a waitlist. Country list not shown on the page. Source
- Upwork / Fiverr: You do it by hand inside the platform. Same fee and AI-use rules as the video-editing path (Upwork 0% to 15%; Fiverr requires honest AI disclosure when asked and customised delivery). Source
The hard part: where people quit
The moment: Competing on price against AI tools. Why: Low-value translation work has been shrinking. What helps: Offer checking and rare language pairs, where humans still earn more.
When to stop
If 6 weeks pass without being accepted by a platform or winning a paid job, stop. Do not continue if you cannot check the target language yourself.
What can go wrong
- Free AI captions are already built into most video apps, so many clients will not pay.
- Pay per minute is low; effective hourly pay depends heavily on how clean the AI draft is.
- Delivering unchecked machine translation under your name can get a Fiverr account suspended for misrepresenting how work was delivered.
- Waitlists and tests are unpaid time.
Age, region and other limits
