Tools by question

Which free text-to-speech tools can you use commercially?

checked 2026-10-08 5 entries from the Tools Atlas

Short answer. Chatterbox, VoxCPM2 and kokoro-onnx are free and licensed for commercial use (MIT or Apache-2.0). Fish Speech and the F5-TTS and OmniVoice model files are not: they are research or non-commercial only. Voice cloning needs the voice owner's consent, and some platforms want AI voices labelled.

One by one

Chatterbox Multilingual Use it

Reads text aloud in 23 languages and can copy a voice from a short sample. A small model. MIT for the code and the model files. Every output carries a watermark; the Atlas has not checked how strong it is. Clone only your own voice or one you have permission to use, and keep the watermark.

Licence. MIT (code and model files). Cost. Free software.

VoxCPM2 Use it

Covers 30 languages at 48 kHz sound quality, and can design a new voice or copy one from a short clip. Apache-2.0 for code and model files. Its usage policy forbids impersonation and asks you to say when a voice is AI.

Licence. Apache-2.0 (code and model files). Cost. Free software.

kokoro-onnx Use it

A very small voice model (about 80 MB) that runs on an ordinary processor, in English and a few major languages. MIT. It cannot copy voices, which keeps the risk low. Use this repository: the original Kokoro one has been quiet since August 2025.

Licence. MIT. Cost. Free software.

Fish Speech Skip it

The best-scoring open voice model we read, but under the Fish Audio Research License: research and non-commercial use only. Commercial use needs a separate licence from its maker.

Licence. Fish Audio Research License. Cost. Free software.

F5-TTS and OmniVoice Skip it

The code is MIT or Apache, but the pretrained model files are CC-BY-NC, so not for commercial work. Take care with video tools such as pyvideotrans, which bundle both.

Licence. CC-BY-NC (model files). Cost. Free software.

Which one fits

Many languages and voice copying: Chatterbox (23 languages) or VoxCPM2 (30 languages). Both have clear commercial licences.

A computer with no strong graphics card, or a graphics card that is busy with something else: kokoro-onnx. It leaves the card free for speech-to-text or translation.

The most natural sound: Fish Speech scores highest, but you cannot use it in paid work without a separate licence, so it is not a shortcut.

Voice rules that apply to all of them

Copy only your own voice, or a voice whose owner agreed. Say when a voice is AI where a platform asks for it, and do not remove a watermark.
