Paid AI training and answer-rating work: is it worth it? (2026)
Watch, not proven yet checked 2026-10-08
You write and rate answers for AI companies on contract platforms; pay per hour looks good on paper but few applicants are accepted and work can stop without warning.
At a glance
| Time each day | 60 minutes a day |
|---|---|
| Set-up, once | about 3 hours |
| Cost to start | USD 0 |
| First dollar, if it works | 1 to 6 weeks |
| Who does the work | None of this should be done by AI: you do it yourself |
| Fits people looking for | extra income on the side, learning a skill that pays |
What you are selling
Your own careful reading, writing and judgement, paid per hour or per task as a contractor on project-based platforms.
What the evidence says about money
Advertised pay is 25 to 50 dollars an hour for general work on DataAnnotation's own page, but only about 2.6% of applicants are accepted (company-reported, per a review site), qualification and onboarding are usually unpaid, and workers across several platforms report empty queues, projects ending without notice, and pay cuts. No income distribution exists. The work is done by the person, not by AI, and using AI to do it can get you removed.
How sure are we: Backed by a secondary source such as press or a review site.
What only you can do, once
- Apply and take the entry assessment yourself (one attempt on DataAnnotation, which takes about an hour)
- Pass identity verification (government photo ID and selfie)
- Set up PayPal to receive payments
- Check that your country is eligible before spending time on tests (country coverage was not confirmed on the pages read)
A first week
| Day | What happens | Who | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Check on the platform's sign-up page whether your country is eligible; stop here if not | You | 15 |
| 2 | AI lists what the assessment will test (reading, grammar, fact checking) and gives practice prompts | AI helper | 10 |
| 3 | Take the one-attempt assessment yourself, without AI, when you have an uninterrupted hour | You | 60 |
| 4 | Complete ID verification if invited | You | 15 |
| 5 | Connect PayPal | You | 10 |
| 6 | Check for available projects; do a paid one if offered | You | 30 |
| 7 | Record unpaid versus paid minutes so far | You | 10 |
The rules where it happens
- DataAnnotation: You do it by hand inside the platform. Generalist roles listed at 25 to 50 dollars an hour, specialists higher; pay through PayPal within a few days of a request; FAQ says work is not guaranteed and depends on demand and past performance; subpar work may cost you access to future projects. Country list not stated. Source
- Outlier (Scale AI): You do it by hand inside the platform. Eligibility varies by project, country and region; own listings say up to 15 dollars an hour for generalists, contributor reports 12 to 30; onboarding is unpaid; Scale cut about 500 contractors in July 2025; a 12.5 million dollar wage-and-misclassification settlement (California workers only, final hearing 30 Oct 2026) is pending. Source
- Alignerr / Mercor: You do it by hand inside the platform. Alignerr page lists average pay of 80 dollars an hour for experts and says some roles need no experience; secondary reports say evaluations can be unpaid and it is effectively US-focused. Mercor advertises 112 dollars an hour on average but a Forbes report (Nov 2025) says a Meta project was cancelled and replacement work paid about 24% less. Source
The hard part: where people quit
The moment: The qualification test and the waiting after it. Why: These platforms screen people before work appears, and work depends on demand and your past scores. What helps: Treat the test as the real first task. Do not apply to many platforms at once.
When to stop
If you are rejected on the first assessment, or accepted but there is no paid task within 4 weeks, stop; do not pay anyone to apply or to access the work. Stop if told to pay a fee or to buy equipment.
What can go wrong
- Acceptance is rare (2.6% reported) and the assessment cannot be retaken.
- Qualification tests and onboarding are often unpaid; one report mentions about 40 hours of unpaid onboarding.
- Work can end abruptly: Scale AI cut about 500 contractors in July 2025; Mercor cancelled a project and offered replacement work at lower pay; Outlier community reports of removal after 2 to 3 weeks.
- Time's 2024 report described a worker deactivated with 2,869 dollars of unpaid work, and a May 2025 class action alleges access can be revoked at any time (allegations, no ruling found).
- Contractor status means no employer benefits, and pay in USD through PayPal.
- Using AI to do the tasks is likely against the rules and detection is a common reason for removal (not verified on each platform).
Age, region and other limits
Minimum age 18. Check eligibility inside each sign-up before taking a test. Fluent English is required.
