Buy and resell domain names: is it worth it? (2026)
Watch, not proven yet checked 2026-10-08
Register web addresses you think a business might want, hold them, and try to sell them for more than they cost.
At a glance
| Time each day | 20 minutes a day |
|---|---|
| Set-up, once | about 3 hours |
| Cost to start | about USD 110, then about USD 9 a month |
| First dollar, if it works | 26 to 104 weeks |
| Who does the work | About 60% of the work can be done by an AI helper; the rest is you |

What you are selling
Domain names (web addresses). Money comes only from a buyer paying more than your registration and yearly renewal costs plus the marketplace commission.
What the evidence says about money
The only figures found are investor self-reports: about 1% of a large portfolio selling per year is described as typical (Namecheap blog, 2020), and forum members in Dec 2022 reported roughly 0.7% to 1%. Because every domain costs a renewal fee every year (.com wholesale price is USD 10.26 now and USD 10.98 from 1 Nov 2026, before registrar mark-up) and marketplaces take 15% to 20%, most small portfolios can be expected to lose money unless a sale is far above the cost of the whole portfolio.
How sure are we: Backed by a secondary source such as press or a review site.
What only you can do, once
- Create a registrar account and pay for the domains (your AI helper never spends money for you)
- Create the marketplace seller account (Afternic, Sedo or Dan) and set payout details
- Check each name for trademark conflicts before buying
A first week
| Day | What happens | Who | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read the cost sheet: renewal price per year for the endings you are considering | You | 15 |
| 2 | AI proposes 30 short names in one niche you understand, with availability checked | AI helper | 10 |
| 3 | AI screens the names for trademark and existing-business conflicts; you remove anything doubtful | AI helper | 20 |
| 4 | Decide how many names you can afford to hold for 3 years (maximum 5 in week one) | You | 15 |
| 5 | Register at most 5 names yourself at a registrar | You | 20 |
| 6 | AI writes listing descriptions and asks-prices ranges; you approve | AI helper | 10 |
| 7 | List the names on one marketplace and record the renewal dates | You | 20 |
The rules where it happens
- Afternic / Sedo / Dan.com: You do it by hand inside the platform. I could not open these marketplaces' own terms. A 2022 industry article (Domain Name Wire) reports Afternic charges 20% under USD 5,000, then 15% and 10% on higher bands, Sedo a flat 20% on distributed sales (about 15% on its own marketplace), and Dan.com took USD 135 on a USD 1,500 sale; rates may have changed. The hard part: where people quit
The moment: Owning names that do not sell. Why: Investors report roughly 1% of names selling each year. What helps: Cap the budget in advance. Your AI helper treats this as a watch path, not a plan.
When to stop
Set a hard cap of USD 110 total for the first year. If no real offer arrives within 12 months, do not renew the names and do not buy more.
What can go wrong
- Most names never sell but cost a renewal fee every year; .com wholesale is rising (up to 7% a year in four of every six years under Verisign's contract)
- Names containing a brand or trademark can be taken away through a dispute process and you can be blamed for cybersquatting (not researched here, my knowledge)
- Fake buyers, escrow scams and payment fraud on offers
- Marketplace commissions of 15% to 20% reduce what you keep
- AI tools that 'appraise' names give guesses, not buyers
Age, region and other limits
Minimum age 18. Registrars and marketplaces generally require adults to contract; exact limits, payout countries and any tax treatment were not verified. Profit from sales is taxable income in most countries.

- Namecheap blog by Andrew Allemann (18 Aug 2020): 1% is described as a typical sell-through rate for an investor with a large portfolio; the author's observation, no dataset cited. [S]
- Domain investor forum thread (Dec 2022): self-reported sell-through of about 0.67%, about 0.8%, and one report of 2 of 20 domains sold; inventories and periods unspecified. [S]
- Openprovider: Verisign .com wholesale price USD 10.26 since 1 Sep 2024, rising to USD 10.98 on 1 Nov 2026 (the page also quotes USD 11.18 with the ICANN fee and an inconsistent intro figure); Verisign may raise .com up to 7% in four of every six years. [S]
- Domain Name Wire (14 Jul 2022): Afternic charges 20% on sales below USD 5,000, then 15% and 10% on higher bands; Sedo 20% flat on distributed listings; Dan.com took USD 135 on a USD 1,500 sale. Rates may have changed since. [S]
- ASSUMPTION: with a 1% yearly sell-through, a 100-name portfolio at roughly USD 11 to 16 renewal each costs about USD 1,100 to 1,650 a year and expects about one sale, so a sale must exceed that cost to break even. Startup USD 110 and the 26 to 104 week range are my estimates. [A]
