'Get paid to complete simple online tasks': why we say do not start
Do not start checked 2026-10-08
Promises daily pay for easy online tasks such as liking videos, 'boosting' products, rating apps or optimising apps, usually offered by text or chat message.
What the evidence says about money
Do not start. The FTC reports task scams grew from zero reports in 2020 to about 5,000 in 2023 and about 20,000 in the first half of 2024, nearly 40% of 2024 job scam reports; reported job-scam losses exceeded USD 220 million in H1 2024 and USD 41 million of that was paid in crypto. The Better Business Bureau (May 2026 report) found North American employment-scam reports rose to 23,234 in 2025 from 11,748 in 2024, with median reported loss USD 1,000 in 2025.

What can go wrong
- Loss of the money you are asked to deposit, usually via crypto
- Identity theft from 'onboarding' forms
- Scammers impersonate well-known companies and use WhatsApp or text messages
- Victims may be targeted again with 'recovery' scams
- Real micro-task sites exist but pay very little; never pay to join one
How it hooks people
Early small payouts that build trust before you are asked to deposit your own money.
Age, region and other limits
Minimum age 18. Report to local consumer or police authorities; FTC and BBB data are US and North America.
