Can you build a paid product on n8n or Windmill? What the licences allow

checked 2026-10-08 5 entries from the Tools Atlas

Short answer. n8n lets you use it for your own internal business or for non-commercial and personal use, and share it only free and non-commercially; a paid product built on it is outside that. Windmill's free Community Edition bars reselling, running it as a managed service and wrapping it in your own product.

One by one

n8n Skip it

A popular workflow tool with thousands of templates. Its Sustainable Use License says you may use or modify it only for your own internal business purposes or for non-commercial or personal use, and may pass it on only free of charge and non-commercially. Files marked .ee need a separate Enterprise License. Copy only the idea of a browse-and-import template library.

Licence. Sustainable Use License (fair-code, not open source). Cost. Free software.

Windmill Skip it

A workflow and script engine. AGPL-3.0 source, but the free Community Edition program files forbid reselling, serving as a managed service and wrapping without a commercial licence.

Licence. AGPL-3.0 for the source; the free Community Edition program files add limits (no reselling, no managed service, no wrapping). Cost. Free software.

Paperclip Copy the idea, skip the tool

An open “company of AI helpers” with goals, budgets, approvals and shareable company templates. MIT. Runs on your own machine and does not talk to platforms. A comparison to learn from, not a part to plug in: borrow the budgets with warnings, the approvals and the portable templates.

Licence. MIT. Cost. Free software.

NVIDIA OpenShell Copy the idea, skip the tool

A sandbox that runs AI helpers under a policy you write. Apache-2.0. Pre-1.0 and heavy for a first-time user; revisit it when you let helpers run unattended.

Licence. Apache-2.0. Cost. Free software.

openrig Skip it

Runs a standing team of coding helpers in terminal sessions. Apache-2.0. Skipped: it organises coding helpers, has no money loop, and writes hooks into other tools' settings.

Licence. Apache-2.0. Cost. Free software.

Internal use versus a product

Using n8n to automate your own business is the case its licence allows. The line is selling it, hosting it for customers, or building a product whose value is the tool itself.

If you only need a few automations, the small steps are often shorter to write as plain code you own than to carry a tool whose licence you must keep checking.

Questions

Is n8n free for commercial use?
Only for your own internal business purposes, or non-commercial and personal use. Passing it on to others must be free and non-commercial.

Is Windmill free to resell?
No. The free Community Edition program files forbid reselling, serving as a managed service and wrapping without a commercial licence.

Do I need a sandbox for AI helpers?
Not for a first project. The Atlas suggests revisiting NVIDIA OpenShell when you let helpers run unattended.
