Launch a very small AI-built app or online: is it worth it? (2026)
Watch, not proven yet checked 2026-10-08
Use AI tools to build a tiny paid app or service for one narrow job, then look for a few people who will pay for it every month.
At a glance
| Time each day | 60 minutes a day |
|---|---|
| Set-up, once | about 20 hours |
| Cost to start | about USD 55, then about USD 28 a month |
| First dollar, if it works | 8 to 52 weeks |
| Who does the work | About 70% of the work can be done by an AI helper; the rest is you |
| Fits people looking for | learning a skill that pays, a long game, more freedom over time |
| It involves | some spending |
What you are selling
A small subscription or one-off fee for an app or service that solves one narrow problem.
What the evidence says about money
Independent Stripe-verified data exist but only for founders who chose to list their projects: in one analysis of 5,079 such projects (March 2026) the median monthly revenue was USD 169 and the top 25% earned above about USD 800, which overstates what a beginner will see because listings are self-selected. For one hosted 'AI runs your company' service, a reviewer quotes its founder saying about 10% of companies made at least a dollar (May 2026), with the top company at about USD 4,000.
How sure are we: Backed by a secondary source such as press or a review site.
What only you can do, once
- Pick a problem and talk to at least 10 possible users before building
- Create the payment-provider account and complete identity verification
- Decide what your AI helper must never do and test it before anyone pays
A first week
| Day | What happens | Who | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Write down 3 narrow problems you or colleagues have that cost real time or money | You | 20 |
| 2 | AI searches public forums for how often each problem appears and what people already pay for | AI helper | 10 |
| 3 | Talk to 3 real people about the best problem and write down what they say | You | 40 |
| 4 | AI builds a one-page prototype | AI helper | 10 |
| 5 | Test it on real examples and list what breaks | You | 30 |
| 6 | AI drafts a simple price page; you set the price | AI helper | 15 |
| 7 | Show it to the 3 people and ask whether they would pay | You | 20 |
The rules where it happens
- Polsia (hosted AI company service): You do it by hand inside the platform. Reviewer snapshot of the in-product pricing (17 Aug 2026): plans from USD 20 a month (1 company) to USD 1,000; Terms of 14 Sep 2026 say a platform fee 'currently 3%' on customer payments and 'currently 20%' on ad spend, withdrawals capped at USD 500 per calendar month. Reported 84.6% 30-day paid churn and Trustpilot 2.9/5 (15 Sep 2026). Not an endorsement. Source
The hard part: where people quit
The moment: Building something and nobody using it. Why: Building is the easy part, getting users is the hard one. What helps: Talk to five users before the second build session.
When to stop
If after 12 weeks and 10 conversations with possible users no one has agreed to pay, stop. Do not spend more than USD 28 a month on tools before the first paying customer.
What can go wrong
- Most small apps earn nothing; one sample of listed projects had a median of USD 169 a month
- 'AI runs the business for you' services have high churn and complaints, and the companies on them rarely earn
- Customers' data, payments and consumer-law duties (refunds, VAT) become your responsibility
- You can easily spend more on tools than you earn
- Sellers of 'AI-built business' packages have been sued by the US FTC for deceptive earnings claims
Age, region and other limits
Minimum age 18. Payment-provider and app-store availability and tax setup vary by country and were not verified.

- Indie Hackers analysis (12 Mar 2026) of 5,079 Stripe-verified projects from TrustMRR: median monthly revenue USD 169, top 25% above about USD 800, top 10% above USD 10,000; self-selected listings, so not a beginner distribution. [S]
- TrustMRR describes itself as a marketplace and database of verified startup revenues, verified via providers such as Stripe, RevenueCat and the App Store; it publishes no totals for how many listings are near zero. [S]
- Preuve.ai review of Polsia (reviewer sells a competing validator): founder said on Mixergy on 27 May 2026 'there is 10% of companies that made at least a dollar'; highest company about USD 4,000; plans USD 20 to 1,000 a month; 29,132 active of 484,592 created companies (about 6%); Trustpilot 2.9/5 on 15 Sep 2026 (1.8/5 on 17 Aug). [S]
- SoFarBot (7 Sep 2026, built from Polsia's API and deck): company-reported 21,276 paying users, 84.6% 30-day paid churn and 7.8% trial-to-paid on 31 Aug 2026; share of companies earning revenue not reported; headline ARR figures conflict between sources. [S]
- American Bar Association summary: FTC cases against Ascend Ecom (alleged at least USD 25 million), FBA Machine (more than USD 15.9 million; about 14% of client stores had no sales and over three quarters made USD 60,000 or less gross) and Ecommerce Empire Builders show AI-branded 'build a business' offers are an enforcement target. [S]
- ASSUMPTION: USD 55 start-up, USD 28 a month in tools, 20 setup hours and 8 to 52 weeks to a first dollar are my estimates (the lowest Polsia plan is USD 20 a month). [A]
