Sell small AI tools: agent skills: is it worth it? (2026)
Watch, not proven yet checked 2026-10-08
Package a small AI helper (a 'skill', a connector between apps, or a ready-made automation) for one specific job and sell or rent it through an app marketplace.
At a glance
| Time each day | 45 minutes a day |
|---|---|
| Set-up, once | about 12 hours |
| Cost to start | USD 0 |
| First dollar, if it works | 8 to 26 weeks |
| Who does the work | About 70% of the work can be done by an AI helper; the rest is you |
| Fits people looking for | learning a skill that pays, a long game |
What you are selling
Access to a small AI tool, usually as a monthly subscription or pay-per-use. The marketplace keeps a share (MCPize says 20%).
What the evidence says about money
No independent income data exists. The best-known figure is a creator who reports USD 177,417 lifetime from an AI agent project (April 2026), but most of it came from selling a guide and personas about running agents, the writer calls it a highlight reel, and the numbers are self-reported. Claims such as 'USD 100 to 1,000 a month per skill' come from marketing articles that name no sellers. A skill-marketplace builder reported 500+ skills listed and no revenue.
How sure are we: Backed by a secondary source such as press or a review site.
What only you can do, once
- Choose one narrow problem you or people you know really have, and test the tool on real examples
- Create the marketplace accounts and complete identity verification for payouts
- Answer the first buyers yourself
A first week
| Day | What happens | Who | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read how one marketplace charges and pays, and what identity checks it needs | You | 20 |
| 2 | AI lists 15 repetitive tasks people complain about in public forums, ranked by how often they appear | AI helper | 10 |
| 3 | Pick the one task you can judge the quality of yourself | You | 15 |
| 4 | AI builds a first version of the tool | AI helper | 5 |
| 5 | Test it on 5 real examples and write down every mistake | You | 30 |
| 6 | AI writes the listing text, price and a plain 'what it cannot do' section; you edit | AI helper | 15 |
| 7 | Create the marketplace account and publish the listing | You | 30 |
The rules where it happens
- Apify Store: You do it by hand inside the platform. Apify docs describe two pricing models (pay per event, pay per usage) and say identity verification (KYC) is required for payouts. The revenue share percentage and payout threshold were not on the page I read. Source
- MCPize: You do it by hand inside the platform. MCPize's own blog says developers keep 80% (85% for founding members who activated before 10 Jun 2026) and payouts go out monthly on the 15th via Stripe. This is the platform's own marketing; I did not read its terms. Source
The hard part: where people quit
The moment: Publishing something and getting no users. Why: This market is new, evidence of earnings is thin, and security researchers have flagged malicious skills. What helps: Build one small, safe tool. Your AI helper sets a cap on time and money first.
When to stop
If after 12 weeks and one published tool no one has paid, stop. Do not pay for 'seller programs', ads or courses about selling AI tools.
What can go wrong
- Income claims are mostly unsourced marketing, and the buyers are often other builders who can make the tool themselves
- Security: a security report cited by a secondary article says 341 malicious skills and 283 skills (7.1% of one registry) leaking credentials were found, so buyers distrust new sellers and platforms can remove listings
- Platforms change revenue share and rules quickly (MCPize's fee rose from 15% to 20% for sellers activating after 10 Jun 2026)
- You are responsible for what the tool does with a customer's data and accounts
- Requires comfort with testing and fixing software, which is not a typical non-technical skill
Age, region and other limits
Minimum age 18. Payouts need identity verification and usually a Stripe-supported country; exact country and age rules were not found on the pages read.

- Apify documentation: Actors can be monetised with pay-per-event or pay-per-usage pricing; KYC identity verification is required for payouts; the page did not state revenue share, payout threshold or schedule. [P]
- MCPize blog (platform's own marketing): developers keep 80%, founding members activating before 10 Jun 2026 keep 85%, monthly payouts via Stripe; the article's income claims ('USD 50 to 2,000 a month', 'USD 500 to 5,000 realistic first-year target') have no named people, dates or sources. [S]
- Beehiiv newsletter (2 Apr 2026): an AI agent project reports USD 177,417 lifetime revenue: USD 76,444 from a guide and personas, USD 80,991 creator cut on ClawMart, USD 19,512 marketplace net, USD 470 other; no per-period dates; the author calls it a highlight reel and does not say how the figures were verified. [S]
- Superframeworks (6 Feb 2026, modified 1 Aug 2026): says premium OpenClaw skills sell for USD 10 to 200 and early sellers report USD 100 to 1,000 a month, with no named sellers or sources; cites Koi Security (341 malicious skills) and Snyk (283 skills, 7.1% of the registry, leaking credentials), which I could not check at source. - Indie Hackers post (25 Mar 2026) by a builder of an open skills marketplace: 500+ skills listed on 8+ registries; no revenue, sales or buyer data reported; creator monetisation described as upcoming. [S]
- ASSUMPTION: 12 setup hours, 8 to 26 weeks to a first paying user and 45 minutes a day are my estimates; no source measures beginner timelines. [A]
