Prompt packs and AI workflow templates: is it worth it? (2026)
Watch, not proven yet checked 2026-10-08
Sell a bundle of tested AI prompts or a ready AI workflow for one specific job (for example 'replies to guest reviews for small hotels').
At a glance
| Time each day | 30 minutes a day |
|---|---|
| Set-up, once | about 5 hours |
| Cost to start | USD 0 |
| First dollar, if it works | 6 to 30 weeks |
| Who does the work | About 70% of the work can be done by an AI helper; the rest is you |
| Fits people looking for | extra income on the side, learning a skill that pays, a creative outlet |
| It involves | selling to people you know |
What you are selling
A document of prompts and instructions that buyers paste into their own AI tool. Generic prompts are free everywhere, so only a specialised, tested pack for a defined job has a chance.
What the evidence says about money
No independent income data was found, so no monthly range is given. A March 2026 blog says most prompt sellers earn very little and describes generic productivity and writing prompts as having very high saturation; its top-seller cases are individual stories, not typical results. Etsy explicitly excludes 'AI prompt bundles' from what sellers may list, which removes the biggest beginner marketplace.
How sure are we: Backed by a secondary source such as press or a review site.
What only you can do, once
- Choose a narrow job you personally know and test every prompt on real examples
- Create the storefront or PromptBase seller account and connect Stripe
A first week
| Day | What happens | Who | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick one narrow job you know well and write down the 3 pains it has | You | 15 |
| 2 | Your AI helper drafts 10 prompts for that job for testing | AI helper | 15 |
| 3 | Test each prompt on real examples and keep only those that give good answers | You | 40 |
| 4 | Your AI helper writes a one-page guide with example inputs and outputs | AI helper | 10 |
| 5 | Check the chosen platform's own rules page for prompt packs and note the fee | You | 15 |
| 6 | Show the pack free to 5 people in that job and ask whether they would pay | You | 20 |
The rules where it happens
- Etsy: Do not automate this. Etsy's Creativity Standards list 'AI prompt bundles' as items that do not qualify under 'Designed by a seller'. Source
- Gumroad: You press publish yourself. Gumroad bans selling access to AI tools, chatbots and content-generation services and reselling PLR content. A plain document of original prompts is not named in the list, but confirm with Gumroad before relying on it. Source
- PromptBase: You do it by hand inside the platform. PromptBase's home page says sellers upload a prompt and connect with Stripe, and shows 330,000+ prompts. The fee and payout terms could not be read on the PromptBase pages fetched (its FAQ returned a 404). A blog states a 20% commission. Source
The hard part: where people quit
The moment: Seeing 50 near-identical packs. Why: Generic prompts are very saturated and most sellers earn little. What helps: Package a workflow for one job, with an example result.
When to stop
Do not start until a primary page confirms that a prompt pack is allowed on the chosen platform and shows the seller fee. If started, stop after 8 weeks without a sale.
What can go wrong
- Extremely crowded with many free prompts
- Buyers can recreate prompts with the AI tool itself, so perceived value is low
- Etsy listing of a prompt pack can be removed and the seller still owes fees
- Selling a chatbot or paid AI access is banned on Gumroad
- Income claims that come with prompt-selling courses are mostly unsubstantiated
Age, region and other limits
Minimum age 18. Stripe is available in many countries; check yours. PromptBase's own country and age rules were not found.
