Write and manage X or LinkedIn posts: is it worth it? (2026)
Worth a try checked 2026-10-08
Write posts for a founder, consultant or small business owner who has no time for LinkedIn or X, and get paid a monthly fee.
At a glance
| Time each day | 45 minutes a day |
|---|---|
| Set-up, once | about 6 hours |
| Cost to start | USD 0, then about USD 11 a month |
| First dollar, if it works | 3 to 12 weeks |
| Who does the work | About 50% of the work can be done by an AI helper; the rest is you |
| Fits people looking for | extra income on the side, learning a skill that pays, more freedom over time |
| It involves | contacting strangers, selling to people you know |
What you are selling
Your time and judgement as a writer. A client pays a monthly fee for a set number of posts; the client's account stays theirs.
What the evidence says about money
Quoted freelance retainers range from about $1,200 to $2,000 a month for beginners (0 to 2 years) for 4 to 6 posts, but that comes from a tool vendor's summary of other pricing guides and no income distribution for new ghostwriters exists. Finding paying clients is the hard part and many people never land one. We show no typical figure.
How sure are we: Backed by a secondary source such as press or a review site.
What only you can do, once
- Create a service profile and one sample page showing your best writing
- Talk to prospects and agree scope, price and approval process (this is a person-to-person job)
- Agree in writing with the client that you may draft for their account and that they approve every post
- Open a bank or payment account for client invoices
A first week
| Day | What happens | Who | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick one kind of client (for example consultants or local trades) you can write for | You | 15 |
| 2 | App drafts 5 sample posts for that kind of client; you edit them to your voice | AI helper | 25 |
| 3 | Publish samples on your own LinkedIn page | You | 15 |
| 4 | App lists 20 real prospects from public pages and drafts a short personal message for each | AI helper | 10 |
| 5 | Send 5 personal messages yourself (no bulk tools) | You | 20 |
| 6 | Send 5 more and reply to any answers | You | 20 |
| 7 | Review replies and adjust the message | AI helper | 10 |
The rules where it happens
- LinkedIn: You press publish yourself. LinkedIn's User Agreement bans third-party software or browser extensions that automate activity (official text not readable; seen via a secondary source). Posting on a member's behalf through the Share on LinkedIn API exists (w_member_social scope, 150 requests a day per member) but needs a developer app. Safer for beginners: native LinkedIn scheduling. Source
- X (Twitter): You press publish yourself. Automated posting from outside sources is allowed if you are authorized, but automated replies and DMs need opt-in, AI reply bots need written approval from X, and automated likes, bulk reposting and aggressive following are prohibited; using someone else's account needs their express consent for each automated action. The page does not mention scheduling. Source
The hard part: where people quit
The moment: Reaching out to the first client. Why: It means messaging people you do not know with nothing to show yet. What helps: Your AI helper writes two samples first, then a short message you can send in one tap.
When to stop
If after 8 weeks and 30 genuine conversations with prospects you have no paying client, stop or change the audience you target. Do not offer free work for more than one trial week.
What can go wrong
- Clients are hard to find and usually leave after a few months
- Platform rules ban automating a client's account through unofficial tools, which can get their account restricted
- You are responsible for facts and for not copying others' work
- Cold messages can annoy prospects; do not use mass automated messages
- AI-generated posts that sound generic get no engagement and clients cancel
Age, region and other limits
Minimum age 18. Client contracts and invoicing rules (VAT, self-employment registration) depend on your country.
