What you are selling
Recommendations. Money comes from affiliate commissions, later perhaps ads inside the newsletter or paid subscriptions. It does not come from the writing itself.
What the evidence says about money
Aggregators say Substack has roughly 100,000 publications earning money out of more than 2 million, a figure that mixes dates and definitions, and one quoted median of about $4,000 a year looks like a survey of already-paid writers. We found no income distribution for beginners, so we show none. Expect no income for months while building a list; Amazon's affiliate program also closes accounts that make no qualifying sales within 180 days of applying.
How sure are we: Backed by a secondary source such as press or a review site.
What only you can do, once
- Create the newsletter account (beehiiv, Substack or Ghost) and confirm your email
- Apply to affiliate programs in your own name (Amazon Associates, brand programs) and accept their terms
- Add the required affiliate disclosure and a postal address / unsubscribe link in the newsletter
- Write or approve the first issues in your own voice and verify each product claim

The rules where it happens
- beehiiv: Can go out through the platform's official connection after you approve it. Free plan up to 2,500 subscribers, Lite about $49 a month (yearly billing), Pro about $95 a month. The Create post endpoint is on Pro and Enterprise plans and the free trial, and from 6 August 2026 omitting 'status' creates a draft. beehiiv takes 0% of paid subscription revenue (Stripe fees still apply). Source
- Substack: You do it by hand inside the platform. Free to publish; 10% of paid subscription revenue plus Stripe fees. No official public API for publishing was found (a third-party glossary says none exists); unofficial scripts may break terms. Source
- Amazon Associates: You do it by hand inside the platform. After applying you have 180 days to make three qualifying sales or the application can be withdrawn; email use of Associates links is allowed only to opted-in recipients, offline use is prohibited; the sentence 'As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases' is required; link cloaking and shorteners that hide Amazon destinations are not allowed; standard commission is 4% for most. The hard part: where people quit
The moment: Sending to a handful of readers. Why: A list grows slowly at first and affiliate income needs trust. What helps: Write for one real reader. Your AI helper tracks sign-ups per post.
When to stop
If after 6 months and 24 issues you have fewer than 100 real subscribers, stop or switch topic. If 6 months of published links bring no sale, stop.
What can go wrong
- Slow list growth; most newsletters stay small
- Affiliate programs can close accounts or change commission rates
- Disclosure and opt-in rules (email laws, Amazon policy, FTC-style rules) apply to you as the sender
- Unwanted AI-generated text can feel generic and lose readers
- Buying subscribers or sending to scraped lists breaks platform rules
Age, region and other limits
Minimum age 18. Amazon Associates programs are per marketplace (country) with separate sign-ups and policies; page read was the US. Affiliate payout and tax rules vary by country. EU senders need a lawful basis (opt-in) for email.
