Turn podcasts and long videos into short: is it worth it? (2026)
Worth a try checked 2026-10-08
Offer small podcasters and coaches a monthly service that turns each episode into a few short clips, a summary and social posts.
At a glance
| Time each day | 40 minutes a day |
|---|---|
| Set-up, once | about 6 hours |
| Cost to start | USD 0, then about USD 16 a month |
| First dollar, if it works | 3 to 12 weeks |
| Who does the work | About 70% of the work can be done by an AI helper; the rest is you |
| Fits people looking for | extra income on the side, learning a skill that pays, more freedom over time |
| It involves | contacting strangers, selling to people you know |
What you are selling
Finished clips and posts. The client pays a monthly fee; their own account posts the result.
What the evidence says about money
A podcast consultant's 2026 guide lists beginner-level managed services at about $500 to $1,000 a month and budget freelance editing at $50 to $100 per episode, but there is no standalone price for clip work and no income data for new providers. Landing the first client is the main hurdle. No reliable income data exists, so we show no typical figure.
How sure are we: Backed by a secondary source such as press or a review site.
What only you can do, once
- Create a simple portfolio from one free sample episode
- Sign a written agreement with each client that they own the content and approve each clip before posting
- Get the client's own login or scheduler access via their approval (never share passwords in chat)
- Open a payment account for invoices
A first week
| Day | What happens | Who | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick one niche of podcaster you could help (for example coaches or local business owners) | You | 15 |
| 2 | Choose a free sample episode you have permission to use (your own or a friend's) | You | 15 |
| 3 | App cuts 3 clips, writes captions and a short summary | AI helper | 10 |
| 4 | Review and fix the clips; save them as your portfolio | You | 25 |
| 5 | App lists 20 small podcasts in your niche from public directories with a short personal message | AI helper | 10 |
| 6 | Send 5 personal messages yourself (no bulk tools) | You | 20 |
| 7 | Review replies and adjust the offer | AI helper | 10 |
The rules where it happens
- OpusClip (AI clipping tool): You do it by hand inside the platform. Free plan 60 credits a month with watermark; Starter $15 a month; Pro $29 a month ($14.50 per month billed yearly) with scheduler. Posting must follow each platform's automation rules. Source
- YouTube Shorts: Can go out through the platform's official connection after you approve it. Reused-content policy: clips of the client's own content are fine, but the policy applies to the channel; unaudited API projects are locked to private uploads. Source
- TikTok: You press publish yourself. Content Posting API requires audit for public posts and TikTok lists a tool for uploading to accounts you or your team manage as not acceptable. Source
- Instagram Reels: Can go out through the platform's official connection after you approve it. Professional accounts only; up to 100 API-published posts per 24 hours. Source
The hard part: where people quit
The moment: Pitching your first podcaster. Why: You need a sample made from their own episode before anyone replies. What helps: Your AI helper makes the sample clip so the message can say 'here is one'.
When to stop
If after 8 weeks and 30 personal pitches you have no paying client, stop or change the type of client. Do not spend on paid tools before the first paying client.
What can go wrong
- Finding clients takes cold outreach; many pitches get no reply
- AI-picked clips can miss the point or misquote the speaker; the client must approve
- You may handle another person's account access: use their own approval flow only
- Clients often stop after a few months
- Copyright: only clip material the client owns or has cleared
Age, region and other limits
Minimum age 18. Invoicing and VAT or self-employment registration depend on your country.
