Run a channel with an AI character or AI: is it worth it? (2026)
Watch, not proven yet checked 2026-10-08
Make short videos or audio around a topic you care about using an AI-made character or voice, and try to earn from ad revenue, subscriptions or sponsors.
At a glance
| Time each day | 60 minutes a day |
|---|---|
| Set-up, once | about 6 hours |
| Cost to start | USD 0, then about USD 16 a month |
| First dollar, if it works | 24 to 78 weeks |
| Who does the work | About 80% of the work can be done by an AI helper; the rest is you |
| Fits people looking for | a creative outlet, a long game |
What you are selling
Attention: platform ad payouts, fan subscriptions or sponsor deals. There is no product; money depends on views.
What the evidence says about money
No median or distribution exists. Published AI-influencer income figures are peak months, agency statements or follower-count estimates, not typical results (one summary says so itself).
How sure are we: Backed by a secondary source such as press or a review site.
What only you can do, once
- Create the channel accounts and decide the topic and the character's honest AI disclosure
- Review every video before it goes out for facts, taste and rights (voice, music, images)
- Complete monetisation applications and tax details yourself
A first week
| Day | What happens | Who | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Choose one topic you can check facts on and decide how you will disclose the AI character | You | 20 |
| 2 | AI proposes 10 episode ideas with scripts of 45 seconds | AI helper | 10 |
| 3 | Read each script out loud and fix facts and tone | You | 25 |
| 4 | AI produces the first 3 videos with the chosen voice and character | AI helper | 10 |
| 5 | Create the channel and post the first video yourself with the AI label switched on | You | 20 |
| 6 | AI drafts replies to comments; you send only the good ones | AI helper | 10 |
| 7 | Check views and watch time; drop any format nobody finished | You | 10 |
The rules where it happens
- YouTube: You press publish yourself. YouTube's policy page says repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetisation, AI is not banned outright but 'the final product must still demonstrate your creative vision'; realistic AI content must be disclosed (per a third-party timeline). I could not read the Partner Program thresholds on the page I opened. Source
- TikTok: You press publish yourself. TikTok community guidelines: realistic synthetic media must be clearly labelled; accounts operated in bulk or through unauthorised automation are not allowed; creating new accounts to evade a ban is prohibited. Source
The hard part: where people quit
The moment: Hours of making and few views. Why: Mass-produced AI channels are ineligible for monetisation and need clear creative input. What helps: One recurring character with a real point of view beats volume.
When to stop
If after 6 months of weekly posting the channel has not reached the platform's monetisation requirements or one paid offer, stop. If a platform removes monetisation or labels the channel as inauthentic, do not open replacement accounts.
What can go wrong
- Demonetisation or removal for mass-produced or undisclosed AI content
- Cloned or imitated real voices and faces can breach platform rules and the law; Spotify bans unauthorised voice clones and deepfakes
- Uploading AI music or tracks to inflate streams has led to criminal charges (a US man pleaded guilty in March 2026 and agreed to forfeit USD 8.09 million)
- Months of work before any payout, and views are not under your control
- Subscription costs for video and voice tools can exceed income
Age, region and other limits
Minimum age 18. Monetisation programmes have follower, watch-time and country limits that I did not confirm; a YouTube Partner Program rewrite announced 10 Aug 2026 takes effect 1 Feb 2027 (third-party source).
