Watch, not proven yet checked 2026-10-08
Write a focused website about a topic you really know, using AI to speed up drafting while you add real experience, and earn from ads or affiliate links if visitors arrive.
At a glance
| Time each day | 45 minutes a day |
|---|---|
| Set-up, once | about 8 hours |
| Cost to start | about USD 35, then about USD 11 a month |
| First dollar, if it works | 26 to 104 weeks |
| Who does the work | About 50% of the work can be done by an AI helper; the rest is you |
| Fits people looking for | a long game, a creative outlet |
| It involves | some spending |
What you are selling
Visitors' attention: ad revenue from an ad network or commission from product links. Nothing is sold directly.
What the evidence says about money
No beginner income data was found. What the evidence shows is risk: Google's spam policy names generating many pages with AI without adding value as 'scaled content abuse', and an SEO consultant's August 2026 spam-update case studies show AI and programmatic sites losing 14,000 to over 200,000 search queries. Pew found people clicked a normal result in 8% of visits that showed an AI summary versus 15% without.
How sure are we: Our own assumption, not verified.
What only you can do, once
- Choose a topic where you have real experience and can add photos or details others do not have
- Buy the domain and hosting, and check and edit every page before it goes live
- Apply to ad networks or affiliate programmes yourself
A first week
| Day | What happens | Who | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick a topic you really know and list 10 questions people ask you about it | You | 25 |
| 2 | AI checks which of those questions already have good answers online and which are thin | AI helper | 10 |
| 3 | Buy a domain and set up a simple site builder | You | 40 |
| 4 | AI drafts page one from your notes; you rewrite with your own experience and add your own photos | AI helper | 40 |
| 5 | Publish the page with a short note saying AI helped draft it | You | 15 |
| 6 | AI drafts page two; you fact-check and rewrite | AI helper | 30 |
| 7 | Check that Google has found your pages and write down the starting visit count | You | 10 |
The rules where it happens
- Google Search: You do it by hand inside the platform. Google spam policy (updated 28 Aug 2026): scaled content abuse includes 'using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users'; sites doing this can lose rankings. Source
- Raptive (ad network): You do it by hand inside the platform. Raptive says AI is acceptable as a tool with meaningful human input, it vets every site, 13% of 2025 applications were rejected for AI-generated content and over 50 sites were removed for AI concerns. Traffic minimums were not on the page I read (page last updated 25 Mar 2025). Source
- Mediavine (ad network): You do it by hand inside the platform. Secondary report: Mediavine says it does not monetise 'low-quality, mass-produced, unedited, or undisclosed AI content' and terminated publisher accounts over it; session requirements were not on the page I opened. Source
The hard part: where people quit
The moment: Months with no search traffic. Why: Ad networks reject AI-written sites without meaningful human input and search clicks are falling. What helps: Only for people who accept a long wait. Your AI helper flags the review week.
When to stop
If after 12 months and 30 reviewed pages the site has fewer than 1,000 visits a month, stop. If Google or an ad network penalises the site for AI content, do not start a copy under a new domain.
What can go wrong
- Search engines and ad networks penalise mass-produced AI pages, and a manual or algorithmic penalty can wipe out the traffic
- AI summaries in search reduce clicks to small sites
- A year or more with no income, plus domain and hosting costs
- Wrong or copied AI text can create legal or reputation problems, especially on health, money or legal topics
- Affiliate programmes have their own rules and can close accounts
Age, region and other limits
Minimum age 18. Ad networks have minimum traffic and country requirements that were not found on the pages read; affiliate and tax rules vary by country.
